13. Lockdown Lowdown with... Conor Higginson (Part Two)

Moving on to now, how is fatherhood treating you? I imagine it has been a hectic past couple of months for you. Are mum and baby doing well?

Mum and baby doing amazingly well, thank you. It's been quite a unique situation having 14 weeks paternity from work on full pay but I certainly wasn’t complaining. As for fatherhood, it was difficult in the first few weeks as it takes time to adjust to actually becoming a dad and being responsible for a baby but as the weeks go by it gets loads easier and more rewarding. The bond we have now is something special.

Have you even had time to think about football? I know you’re a massive Leeds fan and they were obviously flying before Lockdown so are you glad football’s back?

Obviously being on Twitter it was hard not to monitor the situation within the game and what's unfolded in all the leagues. I think the decision to void the lower leagues was the correct one under the circumstances, although a few big spending clubs might disagree with me!

As for being a Leeds fan I was obviously delighted the top tier has relaunched but supporting the Leeds has more ups and downs than supporting any other I club I'm convinced! I am hoping we can get over the line in the coming weeks as I honestly believe we deserve it this season.

We spoke about influences earlier but who would you say has had the biggest impact on your career so far?

My dad obviously had a huge influence at the younger age but to name one person that stands out, it would have to be Pete Shuttleworth. He was like a guardian angel for me at Sheffield FC, Shirebrook and Worksop. We used to talk about anything and everything and he dragged me back from a really bad season where I considered packing in all together, to possibly having the best ever at Worksop in the Northern Premier at the time. Hands down the best bloke I know in football.

You have played for some big clubs at non-league including Sheffield FC, Grantham and Spalding, but it’s Worksop Town where you probably most fondly remembered. You’ve had three spells there and have also previously been club captain. What’s your relationship like with the Tigers?

Still really good. I stay in touch mostly over Twitter with former team mates, management and supporters, 2 lads in particular being Dean Spencer and Rich Nelson who have been known to visit Ollerton Town as well. They aren't just my former supporters but two really good mates of mine.

Do you have a season that you reflect back on and think ‘That was me at my peak’?

The one that stands out for me would be 2013/14 season at Worksop. We had an unbelievable season. The team scored 120 league goals and finished comfortably inside of the play offs with AFC Fylde, FC United of Manchester and Ashton. Chorley won the title but it could have been anyone's at Christmas if you ask me!

We lost to Fylde in the semi final of the play offs and I famously scored a beauty to put us 1-0 up the tie but Fylde were brilliant on the night and we ended up losing 3-1.

Was that also the best team you played in?

The best team would be a toss up between that Worksop team or Spalding United in the 16/17 season.

When you signed you said it felt “inevitable” that you’d end up with us. Though it is obviously not the highest level you’ve played at, does playing for the team literally round the corner from you mean something different to you?

Having grown up in Ollerton and having the "local lad did good" reputation, it was always in the back of my mind the older I got to sign for the club. I'm certainly past playing for the money and just want to be happy playing locally to my family. My grandad is at the age now where he still loves to watch me play but probably couldn’t commit to watching me every week if I played elsewhere. As well as me having a new young family, I have the ability living on Petersmith Drive to be able to walk to training and not be miles away if I am needed at home. It was a move that suited both sides I believe.

Do you try and use your experience to help some of the younger lads in the squad? Perhaps like you were helped coming through at Mansfield.

I would like to think the young lads like having me around. I have certainly seen and experienced most things in the game and its nice to pass that on to try and benefit their individual games. It's also nice that when I say something and its backed by the skipper, Dave, Bodle and Lee. We have got a great relationship and a lot of trust between the players and management and I think that also makes a big difference during the season.

You’ve been in a lot of changing rooms at various different clubs. What is the changing room at Ollerton like? You’re always one of the first to get involved with the banter.

It’s a bit quiet in the Ollerton changing room compared to other clubs I have been at but I put that down to us having mostly young lads like Chewy and Sen who talk about Tik Tok, Love Island and Minecraft.

Looking ahead to next season, do you feel like we’ve seen you at anywhere near your best yet? You had a strong start to last season but have also had difficulties with injury. Do you still feel motivated to get fully fit and try to have a full season?

I don’t think the club have seen my best yet but I am always motivated to play. I do struggle with the odd niggles still so myself, Lee and Bodle have put a plan together that should try and help me get back to my best at some point in the next few months. There's a long way to go but the early signs are good.
