Ollerton Town Assistant Manager Stephen Bodle gave an honest assessment of his side’s performance in Wednesday’s 2-1 loss away at AFC Emley.
The game was played in tumultuous conditions with both sides having to deal with a very strong wind. Ollerton went ahead in the 43rd minute when top goal scorer Gavin King slotted home one-on-one however the hosts hit back with two goals in the second half to seal the three points.
Speaking after the game, Stephen felt Emley deserved the win after their strong showing in the second half:
“I thought Emley bossed it second half. I thought first half was 60-40 in our favour but second half they probably deserved it.,” Bodle said.
“They used the conditions, they opened us up a bit, they went from side-to-side pretty well, went two touch and carried it well in the weather.
“We didn’t win our battles. We didn’t win a header and we didn’t win seconds, and you’ve got to. In this weather and in this league, you’ve got to win your first balls, and if you don’t win your firsts, you win your seconds and we didn’t tonight.”
Ollerton are in the middle of a difficult November and Bodle admitted he would have been happy with a point, something Ollerton nearly secured in the 88th minute when Kyle Ludlow saw an effort cleared off the line. The defeat sees Ollerton’s three game unbeaten run come to an end, something which disappointed Dave Winter’s right hand man:
“Both sides struggled today with the weather. First half, it was tit for tat, not much it, and there wasn’t much in it all day to be fair.
“They’ve scored a worldie second half, we’ve had one cleared off the line with two minutes to go. If we score that it’s 2-2 and we’re happy taking a point.
“To be fair, when we kicked off we would have taken a point there and then but obviously we’ve got beat.
“It’s just a bit upsetting because we played well and got a good result against Shirebrook, then a decent performance against Selby and we come here tonight and we’ve let ourselves down.
“We’ve got lads who want to play nice 5 yard, 10 yard passes and it wasn’t the weather for that today.
“We should have stuck it on them and played on percentages and we should have seen if we could have pinched anything, and we didn’t.
“Fair play to Emley, they stood up to the challenge better than we did. I thought as soon as we conceded we threw the towel in a little bit and I think it was two step forwards, one step back tonight.”
