Ollerton lost 2-1 away to Glasshoughton Welfare on Saturday

Ollerton fell to their second successive defeat on Saturday after a 2-1 loss away to Glasshoughton Welfare. The Town were the fastest out of the blocks and looked like they could blow their opposition away but after failing to make the early dominance count, Glasshoughton took advantage by going ahead thanks to Adam Hayton’s penalty. Mark Carter equalised for Ollerton ten minutes later but Connor Glavin’s second half header would win it for the home side.
After their best performance of the season last Saturday in a 4-0 win over Selby Town, Ollerton travelled to high-flying AFC Emley in mid-week and were defeated 2-0. Despite this, going into Saturday the team believed they could bounce back and secure all three points against a Glasshoughton side currently sit in mid-table.
It was Dave Winter’s side who definitely started the brighter and perhaps should have taken an early lead. The ball fell kindly on the edge of the area for Sam Dockwray but he saw his effort skew wide of the target. Sam Stretton then found himself in space in the area but he failed to beat ‘keeper Dan Waring.
After being limited to just long ball clearances during the opening stages, Glasshoughton started to get the ball down and play with Nathan Keightley seeing a good headed chance go just wide of Scott Gretton’s goal.
The game was in a state of equilibrium but on twenty-two minutes, Glasshoughton were given a treat by Ollerton as Greg Hunter was fouled in the area, with the referee pointing to the spot. Adam Hayton stepped up and duly dispatched his fourth penalty of the season to put the hosts ahead.
Just past the half hour mark, Ollerton levelled the scoreline through man-in-form, Mark Carter. Glasshoughton failed to clear an Ollerton corner and after Brandon Shaw headed the ball back in to danger, Carter was on hand to stab the ball home for his second goal in a week.
Ollerton kept pressing and nearly took the lead on thirty-seven minutes. Lewis Bingham’s shot was saved low down by Waring and after the rebound was fizzed back out, Josh Bowkett could only adjust his feet enough to direct the ball over.
Gretton was called into action late in the first half and some impressive saves by him meant the teams went into the break level.
A curling effort by Bingham early into the second half nearly put Ollerton ahead but only a few minutes later, Glasshoughton retook the lead. On fifty-five minutes, Glavin ghosted into space and headed a Keightley corner past Gretton.
Both teams had chances to add to their tally with Ollerton’s best chances falling to Bingham and Carter who both saw their close range efforts saved.
Brandon Shaw also saw a dipping volley from the edge of the area go wide of the upright before in the last few minutes of the game, Bingham curled another effort just wide of the target.
In the end, Ollerton were unable to find their way past a resolute Glasshoughton side who held on for all three points. Despite taking place on Halloween weekend, the game was anything but a ‘Thriller’ and with an important month ahead of them, Ollerton will now be hoping to spark a good run of form starting next Saturday when they take on Winterton Rangers.
