Ollerton lost 5-1 to Hall Road Rangers on Saturday

Ollerton fell to the bottom of the NCEL Division One on Saturday after a 5-1 defeat to Hall Road Rangers left them pointless after the first five games. It's been a difficult start to life in the NCEL for Dave Winter's men but after reaching a nadir so early on, they will be optimistic that the only way for them to go now is onwards and upwards as they adjust to their first ever season in step 6 football.
Saturday's game against Hall Road Rangers was the first heavy defeat that Ollerton have suffered, with the other games being decided by the odd goal. Even on Saturday they had chances to get back in the game but Hall Road's extra quality shone through and the promotion-hopefuls went on to secure a deserved win.
It was the hosts who began the brighter. Craig Muirhead saw a shot blocked inside the area and from the resulting corner, Dave Mortimer headed just wide of Simon Smith's goal. After the opening stages of the game, it was no surprise that Hall Road took the lead. A cross from the right found it's way to the far post, and Jack Binns climbed higher than Josh Bowkett to head past Smith and into the back of the net.
Ben Bowring had chances for Ollerton which never really surmounted to anything too testing for Hall Road 'keeper, Adam Stevens, before the home side responded through Joe Cooper, who cut inside from the right and forced Smith into a save. From that resulting corner, Ash Dexter headed a good opportunity wide of the target.
Ollerton then created a golden chance to draw level which they failed to take. Kyle Ludlow spun his defender on the left before delivering a great ball across the face of goal towards Josh Bowkett, but the former York City youngster failed to make the contact needed for what would've been a tap in.
Ollerton's chances were then damaged when Ludlow was forced off injured and before the first half was out, Hall Road scored again to double their lead, Muirhead spinning on the edge of the area and firing low into the bottom corner.
Knowing they'd need a big performance in the second half to get anything from the game, Ollerton started quite well and came close to halving the deficit. Bowkett found himself through on goal and after his shot was spilled by Stevens, Lewis Bingham and a recovering defender both dived in for the rebound which was somehow cleared off the line.
Though Ollerton were probably the better team in the early stages of the second period, Hall Road managed to score again to kill the game off. Chris Spinks may have been given a bit too much time on the edge of the area but his shot was of real quality, swerving into the top corner to leave Smith helpless.
After Ludlow's injury in the first half, Ollerton had brought on Greg Tobin and it was who came close next for the visitors, rising highest to head a corner against the woodwork as Ollerton chased a way back into the game.
It wasn't to be however and soon Hall Road had their fourth. The home side hit Ollerton on the counter-attack and after good work by their right winger, the ball was pulled back to Sean Goodwin who swept home from close range.
As the rain continued to pour as it had done all game, it was clear that this was not to be Ollerton's afternoon yet they did manage to score a consolation late on. Bowring saw his shot saved well and after the ball was worked back into the area, substitute James Munson headed in.
Saturday was the annual 'Non-League Day', designed to raise awareness of grassroots football and celebrate all that's good about it. Ollerton were left in little mood to celebrate though as Hall Road scored a fifth to round off the scoring. They won the ball back off Ollerton high up the field and a pass down the left released Jamie Forrester who fired across goal and past Smith to get his side's fifth.
The worrying times continue for Ollerton after another defeat and below-par performance. It's the tough times like this which are the true making of sides and with the fixtures continuing thick and fast, everyone at the club will be hoping that there is a turn around in fortunes sooner rather than later.
