A 40-yard screamer from Tom Cooke helped Ollerton to a 5-1 victory

During a football season, special moments can occur which live long in the memory and as a result exist outside the game in which they occured. Ollerton fan's were treated to such a moment on Saturday after Tom Cooke's stunning 40-yard goal put them 1-0 up against Askern FC as Ollerton went on to secure an important victory.
Ollerton lost to Askern 5-1 back in October but this time around it was Ollerton who were 5-1 winners thanks to Cooke's goal and further efforts by Kyle Clarkson, Eddie Bishop and a brace by Lewis Bingham.
After he scored nine goals in two games against Welbeck over the last week, Ollerton were without striker Kyle Ludlow as well as their captain, Rob Evans with both missing due to illness. As a result, Manager Dave Winter gave a first start to youngster Cameron Mitchell at left back whilst moving utility man, Callam Atkinson, to a forward position.
The opening twenty minutes of the game were close and quite nervy with both teams trying to find a break through. It was Ollerton who came the closest in that search. Tom Cooke played a long ball forward to Lewis Bingham and he controlled the ball brilliantly before hitting a first time lob which beat Danny Jones in the Askern goal, but struck the outside of the post.
Ollerton started to turn the screw and were getting close to the opening goal. Callam Atkinson headed a Jamie Charlton flick-on against the bar, before turning in the rebound but he was left frustrated after being denied by the linesman's flag.
Moments later however, Ollerton had their opening goal and what a goal it was. As Askern backed off Tom Cooke around 40-yards out, he decided to try his luck and have a go at goal. After teeing himself up, Cooke struck a powerful effort which seemed to be flying straight down the middle of goal yet at the last second it swerved and flew into the top right corner, leaving Jones helpless. It was an unbelievable strike and is without doubt Ollerton's goal of the season so far which will take some beating.
Grabbing the opening goal gave Ollerton a confidence boost and before too long they doubled their lead. Charlton held the ball up well and his pass across the box was only kicked away by Jones. Ollerton's Sam Dockwray got to the rebound first and his shot was deflected to the far post where Kyle Clarkson was waiting to back heel into the corner.
After the half time break, Askern came out strongly in search of a way back into the game. Shayn Mundy had two good early chances, seeing a dipping half-volley go just wide of the post before a second shot was blocked well by Ollerton's Eddie Bishop.
Ollerton then came back at their opponents as Kyle Clarkson struck the base of the post with a shot from the edge of the area which seemed at first to be heading wide of the target. Jamie Charlton then had a good chance but fired wide of goal from inside the area.
When the game's third goal arrived it was Askern who got it. Ollerton failed to pick up Haydan Tomlinson from a set-piece and as the ball fell to him, he had the time and space to blast an effort past Smith.
With Askern back in the game, Ollerton would have been expecting them to pile on the pressure but Ollerton settled any potential nerves by restoring their two-goal cushion and making it 3-1. Kyle Clarkson delivered a free-kick into the area and Eddie Bishop rose highest at the far post to thump a header into the net.
This seemed to be a pivotal moment in the game as it appeared to kill off Askern's chances of getting something from the game as Ollerton went on to grab two more goals late on.
An Askern defender failed to deal with a cross into the area and the ball dropped kindly for Lewis Bingham who had the simple task of turning the ball home from a few yards out.
Bingham had his second, and Ollerton's fifth, a few minutes later. Danny Jones spilt a Clarkson corner and the ball dropped for Bingham who slid the ball in past the two Askern defender's on the line.
The game marked the start of a tough run of games for Ollerton who have a League Cup semi-final against Blidworth and a league encounter against Glapwell in their next two games. The Askern victory made it four wins in a row for Dave Winter's side and sets them in good stead for what could be a pivotal two weeks in determining the success of Ollerton's season.
