A game of few chances was won by Retford on Saturday afternoon

Ollerton were edged out 1-0 by Retford FC on Saturday as Dave Winter’s men were unable to secure the three points in the local derby.
On the day, both teams defended well and restricted their opponents attacking threat yet the one meaningful chance that Retford had was taken and it proved to be the difference between the two teams on the day.
Kyle Ludlow began the day upfront for Ollerton but his afternoon was cut short after he was forced off on 17 minutes with an injury. Jamie Charlton was his replacement and Charlton had a great chance to put the visitors ahead, but after the ball dropped kindly for him in the area, his close ranged shot was saved by Ryan Elkington in Retford’s goal.
Neither side were really creating note worthy chances with both teams trying their luck from distance, Matthew Bryce for Retford and Ollerton’s Callum Atkinson both seeing long ranged efforts saved easily.
After a cagey forty five minutes, it was no surprise that the teams went into the interval level with the score at 0-0.
Ollerton were nearly gifted an opener in early stages of the second half. A headed pass to Elkington was palmed out for some reason and after latching onto the rebound, Jamie Charlton clipped the outside of the post from the tightest of angles.
The games only goal came halfway through the second period. Ryan Middleton saw his shot across goal tipped away by Ollerton’s Simon Smith but the ball fell kindly for Simon Brewster who arrived at the far post to turn in the rebound and give Retford the lead.
Ollerton’s pursuit of an equaliser was a largely frustrated one as they struggled to get the better of Retford’s resilient defence, led well by former Ollerton captain Terry Annable.
Another former Ollerton player, Will Tomlinson, was brought on by Retford during the second half but the league’s top goalscorer failed to help his team much as he was sent off for an elbow on Jordan Schofield.
Despite the man advantage, Ollerton were still struggling to create the chances they needed to get back in the game and Retford were able to run the clock down to see the game out and secure the three points.
