Ollerton's recent good form was undone by a 5-1 defeat to Askern on Saturday

Ollerton were brought back down to earth on Saturday after Askern defeated them 5-1 to end a run of four successive wins for the Town.
Ollerton came into the game after a 2-1 win over league leaders Appleby Frodingham the week before, a result which had been preceded by wins against Dinnington Town, Thorne Colliery and Clifton All Whites. Against Askern however, they failed to repeat that form and were deservedly well beaten.
Askern's first goal came after a mix-up in the Ollerton defence. The ball was passed across the area and though two Ollerton defenders dived in to block the shot, the ball fell kindly for Michael Attard who lifted the ball into the back of the net.
Ollerton then started to turn the screw and had around eight corners in quick succession where they looked, but failed to test Chris Yeats in the Askern goal who looked very uncertain when dealing with crosses. From the last of these corners, Askern scored their second. They broke away well and when a cross from the right found Attard at the far post, he knocked the ball back into the middle of the goal and though the resulting shot was blocked on the line by Sam Stretton, the referee judged that Stretton had used an arm to do so and pointed to the spot. Gary Mundy stepped up and sent Simon Smith the wrong way to double Askern's lead.
Ollerton had a great chance to half the deficit but after Chris Hewitt latched onto a defensive error, his deft lob over Yeats unfortunately found the top of the net. Hewitt did however get a goal back for Ollerton with the last kick of the first half. He latched onto another defensive error and had the time and space to poke the ball past Yeats and into the corner of the goal.
Getting a goal back just before half-time could have been a springboard for an Ollerton comeback but credit must go to Askern who seemed to raise their performance in the second half and went on to add three more goals.
The Askern third came from their second penalty of the day. Hewitt tripped an Askern player in the area and though Gary Mundy saw his spot-kick saved by Smith, Attard was on hand to turn the ball home and get his second of the day.
Askern then made it 4-1 shortly afterwards. Shaun Mundy sprinted clear of the Ollerton defence too easily and after going through one-on-one with Smith, he finished well to seal the three points for Askern.
Askern continued to pour salt in the Ollerton wounds and soon it was 5-1. A ball wasn't dealt with well enough and it rolled favourably to Shaun Mundy who had the easy job of rolling the ball past the stranded Smith.
Ollerton looked deflated and never really came close to testing the Askern defence. The closest they came was in the game's dying embers when Jamie Charlton struck the bar from the edge of the area.
A very disappointing day for Ollerton after a performance which fell way short of the recent standards the team have set for themselves. With a week off now until their next game, Ollerton will be looking to regroup ahead of their Notts Senior Cup tie against Newark Town on November 7th.
