Ollerton won 2-1 for the second league game in a row

Ollerton recorded their second win in a row after defeating Thorne Colliery 2-1 on Saturday.
Pardoning the pun, but Thorne had proved to be somewhat of a thorn in Ollerton's side over recent years and Dave Winter's men had lost this fixture in the past four seasons.

However, they always looked relatively comfortable on Saturday, especially when Jamie Charlton fired them into an early lead. They gifted Thorne an equaliser moments later but secured the win thanks to Kyle Clarkson's second half free-kick. Ollerton missed a hatful of chances as well and on another day, would have won by a more comfortable margin.

Dave Winter was forced into somewhat of a reshuffle due to player's being absent so Jordan O'Callaghan was moved from his usual midfield role to right back whilst Tom Cooke moved inside to partner Paul Burgess at the heart of Ollerton's defence.

Someone who was making their first start of the season was Chris Hewitt and after finally recovering from a long-term injury, the attacker played a crucial role in Ollerton's opener inside the first ten minutes. He dispossessed a Thorne defender on the right of the area before running to the byline and pulling the ball back to Jamie Charlton who fired into the corner.

After such a positive start to the game, Ollerton were left kicking themselves shortly afterwards as they let Thorne back into the game. The ball was headed towards the Thorne number 9 who had time to hit a well-struck shot which crawled over the line after Ollerton 'keeper Simon Smith got a touch to it.

Despite the disappointment, Ollerton never let it get to them and were soon probing once again to take the lead. After Hewitt set up Charlton earlier in the game, the roles were very nearly reversed as from the right, Charlton sent a pass across the box to his team-mate but Hewitt unfortunately couldn’t get enough contact on the ball.

Thorne had chances of their own and came close to taking the lead. Their attacker was found in space, only a few yards away from goal but Simon Smith pulled off a brilliant save to tip the ball over the goal and keep the score at 1-1.

Then with only moments left in the first half, Ollerton came close once again to retaking the lead. Chris Hewitt sent in a cross from the left which found Clarkson at the far post but the Ollerton winger unfortunately headed wide from a good position.

Clarkson’s frustrations in front of goal continued into the second half. Firstly, he fired a shot from the edge of the area right at the ‘keeper before seeing a good chance saved by the Thorne ‘keeper after he was picked out in the box by Ollerton captain, Craig Stanton.

Clarkson was a continued threat and he finally reaped the reward for his efforts when he scored what would turn out to be the winning goal. After good footwork on the edge of the area, Clarkson was brought down by a Thorne defender with the referee having no choice but to award the freekick. Clarkson himself stepped up and bent a terrific effort around the wall and into the corner of the goal.

Ollerton will have been hoping to use this as a springboard to go on and score a few more but unfortunately they couldn’t do so and despite efforts by the likes of Jamie Tryner and Stanton, Ollerton’s tally remained at two which proved to be enough once again to give them what was a well-deserved win.
