Ollerton lost 3-1 to Glapwell in their first home game of the new season

Ollerton’s first home game of the season ended in defeat at the hands of a very strong Glapwell side. An opening day victory away at Easington was the perfect start to the season but the Town suffered contrasting fortunes this week as Glapwell took home a well-deserved three points
Manager Dave Winter was forced into three changes from last week’s 4-1 victory as a midfield trio of Sam Stretton, Gary Armstrong and Craig Stanton were all unavailable. As a result, Winter handed debuts to Matthew Thompson and Danny Wiltshire whilst Callum Atkinson started, after coming on as a substitute against Easington.
Glapwell came into the game on the back of a victory against Newark and with both sides fancied to do well this year, Ollerton and their opponents were both looking to use the game to make an impression. However, it was Glapwell who started the much stronger and Ollerton soon found themselves 1-0 behind. A cross into the area found Tom Norris and he had the space and time to flick a head across goal, past Simon Smith and into the corner of the net.
Ollerton’s poor start continued with Glapwell controlling much of the opening 25 minutes but without adding to their lead. As the half wore on however, Ollerton started to grow more and more into the game and soon created a few chances of their own.
Danny Wiltshire ran through on the left hand side of the area but after poking the ball past Glapwell’s keeper, was frustrated to see the shot cleared by a recovering defender.
Ollerton then believed they had a stonewall penalty turned down. Jamie Charlton beat a defender inside the area and then appeared to be held back by the defender to prevent Charlton getting a shot away. Despite passionate protests, the referee ignored the call.
Just before half-time, Glapwell struck a killer blow by doubling their lead against the run of play. A cross from the right was headed in by Jake Balinger at the near post to give Ollerton a mountain to climb.
The second half was a less entertaining affair with Glapwell doing well to keep their lead despite Ollerton’s best efforts.
Ollerton were growing increasingly frustrated at not being able to find a way back into the game and when Glapwell scored a third, it seemed to kill the game. Jake Balinger scored his second of the game, running into the box and slotting past Smith.
Ollerton’s continued efforts to get a goal finally paid off with around five minutes remaining. Jamie Charlton made it two goals in two league games for him, finishing just past the outstretched arm of the Glapwell ‘keeper.
Unfortunately for Ollerton there wasn’t enough time left on the clock for that goal to inspire a comeback and Glapwell saw out the game to take the 3-1 victory.
Ollerton face another tough test when Harworth visit The Lane on Tuesday and Dave Winter’s men will be looking to bounce back from Saturday’s disappointment and get back to winning ways.
